Artificial intelligence in video games

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Video Games

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in video games is a crucial element that generates responsive, adaptive, or intelligent behaviors, primarily for non-player characters (NPCs) to simulate human-like intelligence. AI has been a part of video games since the early 1950s, evolving significantly over time to enhance the game-player experience.

The Role of AI in Video Games

AI in video games is designed to improve gameplay and create engaging experiences for players, distinguishing it from the broader field of academic AI, which focuses on machine learning and advanced decision-making processes. In video games, AI aims to make interactions feel more dynamic and challenging without necessarily striving for full autonomy or self-learning capabilities.

Historical Development of AI in Games

  • Early Beginnings (1950s Onwards): AI first emerged in the 1950s with basic implementations in video games. These initial uses focused on simple, rule-based behaviors for opponents.

  • Golden Age of Arcade Games: During the golden age of arcade games, the concept of AI-controlled opponents became popular. AI was implemented through graduated difficulty levels, pre-programmed movement patterns, and dynamic in-game events that responded to player actions.

Modern AI Techniques in Video Games

Today, AI in video games often involves well-established techniques such as:

  • Pathfinding: This allows NPCs to navigate complex game environments smoothly, using algorithms like A* (A-star) to determine the most efficient paths.

  • Decision Trees: These help NPCs make choices based on predefined conditions, creating the appearance of strategic thinking in response to in-game situations.

AI is also used in areas that are less visible to players, such as:

  • Data Mining: This technique analyzes player behavior to refine game mechanics, balance difficulty levels, and create more personalized experiences.

  • Procedural Content Generation: AI generates content like terrain, levels, and quests dynamically, providing a diverse gameplay experience.

Misconceptions About "Game AI"

It is important to note that "game AI" differs from the more ambitious concept of an artificial person or an AI that can pass the Turing test. Game AI does not aim to create an artificial general intelligence (AGI) but rather focuses on creating believable and enjoyable interactions for the player.

However, "game AI" does not, in general, as might be thought and sometimes is depicted to be the case, mean a realization of an artificial person corresponding to an NPC, in the manner of say, the Turing test or an artificial general intelligence.
